Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo review: waterfront views and walking in James Bond’s footsteps

1) The backstory

Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo enjoys the great privilege of being the only waterfront hotel in Casco Viejo, Panama City’s historic quarter. It opened in January 2023 with 159 lofty-ceilinged rooms and 35 suites, joining Sofitel’s prestigious line-up of legendary properties.

At Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, history-loving travelers can dance the night away at the site of the ballroom that hosted Queen Elizabeth II, who visited Panama in 1953 during her first overseas trip as reigning monarch. This hotel is the elegantly reimagined headquarters of Club Unión, an exclusive 1871-founded social club where Panama’s aristocracy hobnobbed (Helen Keller and Albert Einstein were also esteemed guests). Now, the hotel has taken that rich history and infused it with hints of modernity, turning it into a place that’s as glamorous as it is storied.

For cinephiles, it also has some Hollywood connections. The building lay in tatters after being bombed and abandoned for three decades (notorious Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega reportedly used it as a hideout), and its shell appeared in the 2018 James Bond film “Quantum of Solace.”

2) The rooms

Rooms at Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo are elegant and expansive and the common thread is that more than 80 percent of them have ocean views.

My Magnifique Room Oceanfront King featured a dark mahogany four-poster king bed, a sitting area, and a wrought-iron balcony, which was unquestionably the highlight for me as a place to enjoy a (complimentary) cup of tea overlooking Panama Bay and its Cinta Costera 3 trail. The room included a spacious entry with built-in closets and dedicated luggage storage, which is often missing in other hotels.

The bathroom, a retreat within the retreat, smelled divine with Diptyque Paris toiletries, and there were biodegradable essentials like reusable coffee cups and bamboo toothbrushes. It had a double vanity, a claw-footed soaking tub, and a walk-in shower.

Thoughtful touches include blackout shades that allow for restful slumber and twice-daily housekeeping service. Other sustainability nods are the fact the key cards are wooden instead of plastic and the air conditioning automatically turns off after the balcony doors have been open for more than a minute.

3) Food & drink

Caleta, the Mediterranean restaurant at the heart of this hotel, channels a French brasserie feel. Open all day, it’s where you can start your morning with a croissant or pain au chocolat straight from the bakery cart that rolls by your table. From a presentation and taste standpoint, I can’t speak highly enough about the beef tartare with hazelnuts, Dijon mustard, and egg sauce, which is an appetizer on the dinner menu.

Mayda, the main bar off the lobby, is where the hotel’s social pulse beats the loudest. It has views of the courtyard and is the go-to spot for small bites. You have to walk through Mayda to get to all the guest rooms so it’ll likely be a focal point of your stay.

Vera Cafe, tucked off the lobby, is your go-to for morning pastries, grab-and-go sandwiches, and your dose of coffee from the Panamanian highlands to start the day.

Just below the courtyard, you’ll find the Pool Bar, a bright, lively space that’s all about enjoying a cocktail, ceviche, fresh juice, or a raspao (the Panamanian snow cone) from a partially submerged sun lounger.

Ammi rooftop was the last of the food and beverage venues to open, and it’s as good a place as any to nurse a cocktail and lose track of time while gazing at the bay views. You can also escape into Ammi’s speakeasy, Arcano, where adroit mixologists will give you a tarot card reading and fix you up a drink based on what they say.

4) Services & amenities

Indoor and outdoor thrills abound. The hotel has the largest swimming pool in Casco Viejo and 24-hour in-room dining as well as a full-service spa, Sofitel Spa with Kos Paris. The spa has got all the trimmings: an expansive relaxation area, a tearoom, and a plunge pool where you can soak away whatever’s left of your stress post-treatment.

I went for the “Mineral Miracle” with Himalayan salt stones and healing crystals placed at eye level. My massage therapist was clearly no novice, providing an out-of-body experience I immediately wanted to repeat. I dreaded the three sounds of the gong that signified the end of my 90-minute treatment.

And if you’re more about breaking a sweat, the 24-hour fitness studio overlooking the sea will do the trick. You can get your heart rate up with the latest cardio equipment or go for a one-on-one session with a trainer.

The hotel’s concierge can seamlessly orchestrate any off-property experiences you seek, whether that’s sailing on the hotel’s yacht, exploring the old town with a guide in tow, or heading out on a beach getaway.

Let’s not forget the 9,880 square feet of event space—perfect for whatever kind of gathering you’re plotting, from a well-attended wedding to a stylish soiree in a ballroom where royals once cavorted.

Evening entertainment at the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo is different from other hotels. At 6 p.m. every day, there’s a candle ritual inspired by the old Parisian tradition of lighting the streets during Louis XIV’s reign, but here, it’s got a Panamanian spin. Dancers in Panama’s traditional costume, including the award-winning pollera, perform a folkloric dance and twirl into the sunset.

5) Style, decor & character

The Sofitel Legend brand is known for preserving historical locations and transforming them into luxury cultural getaways that reflect the character of the region. This property has been renovated to incorporate the country’s Spanish and French past, maintaining the original French architecture.

Adorned with archival photographs and navigational instruments, the premises narrate Panama’s maritime legacy and its bonds with France, which made a valiant two-decade endeavor to construct the canal in Panama before the mantle was assumed by the United States.

The lobby’s centerpiece is a striking tiled mural of the Panama Canal, and greeters sporting Panama hats and crisp cream uniforms stand at the entrance, blending history and style in a way that just works.

The furnishings also tell a story. Each piece is a nod to Panama’s wild side—the vibrant flora and fauna that make Panama one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.

Hand-painted blue and white patterned tiles feature prominently throughout as well as palm trees absolutely everywhere to remind you of your tropical isthmian setting.

The overall vibe feels grown up though children are indeed welcome (there’s a 2,000-square-foot family-friendly penthouse).

6) Location & nearby sights

This exquisite hotel is located in Casco Viejo, a charming UNESCO-listed neighborhood that’s hands down the best place to stay in Panama City for first-timers. But Casco Viejo isn’t just about the past. It’s constantly reinventing itself with art galleries, boutique hotels, and hip restaurants moving in.

The cobblestone streets are lined with buildings that have seen better days but wear their decay with pride, and they exist alongside uber-fresh yoga studios, craft beer bars, and the almost uncountable number of glittery string-lit rooftops.

7) Who it’s right for & what to pack

Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo is one of the best boutique hotels in Panama City. It’s sure to captivate design enthusiasts and luxury travelers alike. It nails it for people who want the best of both worlds—being right in the thick of things, yet still off the beaten path on a decidedly quieter corner of the old town.

Don’t forget a fan. Panama is notoriously humid and perennially sunny, even in “winter,” which falls between mid-April to early December.
